Most of the best/busiest resorts cluster around the south coast in particular, the breathtaking Maspalomas sand dunes. Four miles of dunes and beaches line the Maspalomas/Playa del Ingles shoreline, and there's a pair of beaches at Puerto Rico - to sunsoak in the island's hottest resort. With watersports galore from many beaches, there are quiet coves too for tranquillity.

Set between two bays, the capital, Las Palmas, is worth a visit for its Old Town, museums and cathedral. For sheer drama, visit Bandama - the only clear visible crater in the north west of the island. And make time for Mogan - for fresh seafood in the fishing port town.
