The famous Balcon de Europa

The other highlight is the equally famous cave, also known as the Prehistoric Cathedral, with almost two kilometres of floodlit caverns boasting enormous vaults, haunting figures and Palaeolithic cave paintings.

A Holiday in Nerja makes for a different type of resort in Costa del Sol

Holidays to Nerja will take you to around 50 kms east of Malaga and is a far cry from the high-rise resorts further down the coast. The cobbled streets of the Casco Antiguo (Old Town) although bustling with life are light years away from places such as Torremolinos. During the day they are packed with visitors taking advantage of the many alfresco cafes and buying handicrafts in the local shops. By night they burst into life with people popping in and out of the many tapas bars and restaurants.

In sharp contrast to the big resorts, Nerja is compact making it ideal to explore on foot. Alternatively for a romantic treat, explore the pretty town by the plentiful coche de caballo (horse and carriages).

Nerja Beaches

There are many fine beaches to choose from while you are on holidays in Nerja has some 16kms of coast offering everything from hideaway coves to long sandy stretches of shore.

Playa de Burriana Beach

Playa de Burriana Beach to the east of the town, is one of the best in Nerja.

Playa el Salon Beach

The Playa el Salon Beach to the right of the Balcon de Europa, is small but has great sand and plenty of sun loungers and parasols for hire.

Playa Calahonda Beach

The is the fisherman’s beach and tends to be the least crowded of the town beaches.

Playa Torrecilla Beach

This beach is to the west can offer a quieter experience with fewer families and few children.

Arrive at the beach as early as possible to get a good position on the sands. And in general, the further you walk away from town, the more space you will find and if you are really lucky, you might just have a deserted cove to yourself!

Sea Life

Near the marina in Benalmadena, is one attraction that kids always enjoy. Excellent – but not too heavy – education on the sea and sea life and the hands-on section will entertain adults and children alike.

Boat trips

Popular boat trips run from the marina to Fuengirola and Malaga. The Super Goleta head for Malaga and the Joven Maria II goes to Fuengirola.

Tivoli World

This large amusement park at Arroyo de la Miel nr Benalmadena, includes numerous rides, restaurants, computerised fountains, flamenco shows and outdoor theatre. Don’t miss the giant roller-coaster and the Wild West Town.

Moncho’s Tourist Train

For very young try Moncho’s Tourist Train, which circles the marina at regular intervals and can be a good way of filling a spare half-an-hour!

Jardin de las Aguilas (The Eagle Garden), Castillo de Aguilas, Benalmadena-Pueblo

This falconry centre near the old white hilltop town holds regular demonstrations, which are spectacular.

Aqualand Torremolinos

This stunning complex houses Europe’s biggest water-slide, amazing wave machines and the infamous Cresta Run water mountain. There is more than enough to keep the kids and kids at heart occupied for days on end if you don’t fancy the beach. Take a picnic or eat at the alfresco restaurants and cafes, which you will find here. Open May to Sept daily from 10am-6pm.

The Crocodile Park

One of the coast’s most popular attractions is located just outside Torremolinos. Open daily May to September 10am-7pm and from October to April 10am-5pm.

Aquamijas

Another water-themed adventure playground close to Torremolinos, offering water slides, pools, mini-golf and sunbathing areas. Top attractions are the wave pool, kamikaze slides, wild river, beach volleyball and blue lake. Free parking. Taxi ride away from Marbella. Take your own food or dine in one of the many restaurants.

Eating and Drinking in Nerja

There is an excellent selection of restaurants and tapas bars in Nerja but prices tend to be higher in the Old Town. You need to head out of the centre for more reasonable deals and a bigger selection.

Entertainment in Nerja

There is plenty of entertainment along the Costa coast and whilst you will find some of what you want in Nerja itself, it is definitely worth taking a trip to nearby Malaga for more choice.

Nerja’s International Festival of Music and Dance during June or July attracts many international celebrities and stars, and has the famous prehistoric cave as a stunning stage and backdrop.

Getting Around on holiday in Nerja

The nearest airport is Malaga, which can be reached by road in around half-an-hour from Nerja.

Make use of the regular Buses

Buses Regular buses ran along the coast road to Malaga and further down the Costa coast, stopping at Nerja every 15 mins. There are also frequent buses from Nerja to Granada, Tarifa, Ronda, Cordoba, Cadiz and many other major destinations.

Holiday nightlife in Nerja

Nerja’s nightlife can’t match that of places such as nearby Malaga or further down the coast, Torremolinos and Marbella, but it has its fair share of bars and selection of clubs to party in. The place to be after dark is on and around Plaza Tutti Frutti, where there are plenty of lively cafes and bars.

What’s the shopping like in Nerja

There are plenty of shops in Nerja, which will cater for your every holiday need. But if it’s big name and trendy fashion designers you are after you need to head down the road towards Malaga or even better, Marbella. For local bargains try the Tuesday street market where you can taste and pick up the delicious local delicacies including honey and sweet dessert wine.

Sports and Activities

There are plenty of sports activities on offer including hiking, horse riding, tennis, swimming, sailing and of course golf. There are over 35 golf courses on the Costa del Sol to choose from, mostly further down the coast south of Malaga, where international championships have been held and that are renowned throughout Europe.

Diving

There are plenty of good diving opportunities in the warm clear sub-tropical waters along this stretch of the coast.

Outward Bound

There are plenty of exciting outdoor activities to take advantage of in the surrounding area such as mountain biking, climbing, sailing, going on a jeep safari and hand-gliding. The following centres can hire equipment or organise activities.
