Summer is dry and hot. Daytime peaks around 29-31 C in July-August. Sea sits about 23-24 C in high season. Spring and October are milder and lovely for walking.

Getting there and transfers

Summer brings weekly direct flights from the UK on selected routes. There are Gatwick services in late summer; Another is the seasonal options from Birmingham earlier in the season. The rest of the year, connect via Athens. Samos Airport to Kokkari is about 16 miles; taxis take ~25-35 minutes and are usually around £30-£31. The public bus works, but allow about 1 h 45 m with a change.

What to eat and drink

Think tomato salads, grilled octopus, swordfish, souvlaki and local cheeses. House wine is decent and cheap. Do not miss sweet Samos Muscat with dessert. Waterfront tavernas keep prices sane and portions generous.

Things to do that don’t cost much

Swim the emerald bays at Tsamadou and Lemonakia. Walk the pretty lanes around the harbour at dusk. Hike to Potami Waterfalls near Karlovassi; it is a rewarding half-day with minimal spend. When you fancy a splurge, the Samiopoula boat day with lunch is a classic and starts around £48.
