Located in a attractive setting is the wide sand and shingle beach of Roquetas de Mar. Three kilometres of sand and shingle, and the coveted Blue Flag status make it a favourite with families. There are numerous cafes and bars, plenty of cheap tourist shops and local craft stalls.

Aguadulce’s well established beach is about 10 kilometres west of Almeria, an uncomplicated Spanish resort with superb facilities and safe sandy beaches.

Ancient cultures have left their mark on Almeria, so there is no shortage of archaeological sites. On the Cabo de Gata peninsula stands a lighthouse, marking the coastal nature reserve of Cabo de Gata. The landscape is fascinating combining desert with volcanic mountains, sand dunes and wetlands. Mojacar

This pretty Moorish town on the hill has a cluster of narrow, winding streets. Don’t miss the Arab gate to the town, the church, and gift shops, which specialise in jewellery, ceramics and locally woven rugs. Watch out for the festivals here and the gypsy fair in Turre. Mojacar has an attractive 5km long beach and water sports, and offers a good choice of restaurants and bars.

Roquetas de Mar

The name Roquetas de Mar translates as little rocks on sea, The resort has three main areas: the village (pueblo), the port, and the urbanizacion where the holiday apartments, hotels and tourist facilities are concentrated. The resort has a long (approx 3km), clean shingle beach which is great for swimming and patrolled by life guards during peak season. Numerous inexpensive bars and restaurants line the promenade.

Almerimar (20km from resort) This is a smaller resort than Roquetas, purpose built in the natural park. The resort is surrounded by unspoilt beaches, including a nudist beach called Playa de Cerillos.

Cabaret

Many of the larger hotels offer cabaret style shows on a nightly basis. Shows at the Hotel Playa Linda, Avenida de Playa Serena and the Hotel Zorida Gardens in Roquetas de Mar are worth a look. These shows feature Flamenco dancing, Spanish singers and musicians, and usually take place on a stage near the exterior poolside bars. Admission is free to guests from other hotels and apartments, although you may find that the drinks are slightly more expensive.

Bullfighting

In the centre of Roquetas Town lies the Bullring. Not to everyone’s taste, but the Spanish love them so if you’re intrigued, look out for posters advertising bullfighting and also the pop/rock concerts and opera which the venue will also be used for. Contact the Tourist Office for further details.

Royal Mini Casino Avenida de Playa Serena next to the Hotel Plays Capricho, Roquetas de Mar. This houses a range of fruit machines and video games.

Medieval Night

Tabla Medieval Wien, Avenida de Playa Serena, Roquetas de Mar. For20 euro per head, minimum 4 people you can have a truly medieval experience. Food is served to you on platters and eaten with fingers. A half a litre of beer or wine or soft drink is included in the price, along with free schnapps, dessert and coffee. Games are played on a medieval theme, and can result in visitors being locked up in a cage!

Party night is on a Sunday when the entertainment is organised by travel reps from all over the resort including a quiz, karaoke and games. Families and children are welcome and this is a good opportunity to make new friends.
