Where to fly into

Best airports are Malaga, Seville, and Jerez. Distances are about 47.6 miles (AGP), 50.6 miles (SVQ), and 41.7 miles (XRY). If you have not made use of the inclusive transfer from your holiday package, don’t worry. Driving from Malaga takes roughly 1 h 50 m. Without a car, bus via Ronda works and is cheap.

Summers are hot and dry. Winters are cool and greener. Peak highs sit near the low 30s C in July-August. Late spring and September feel perfect for long walks.

Swim or indulge in water based activities on the turquoise Zahara-El Gastor reservoir. The promenade at Les Rotes this is not; it is wilder and stunning. Kayak hire is available near the lake. Hike Tajo Algarín or Las Grajas for big views. Stroll to the Dolmen del Gigante in under 2 miles.

Ronda is about 18.8 miles by road. Buses run, or drive the scenic route and park by the old town. Zahara de la Sierra is close too, with a tiny summer “beach” by the reservoir.
